If you are currently going through a financial crisis, saving money is probably at the forefront of your mind. After all, we all know that every little bit helps, especially when you are attempting to work your way out of a tough financial situation.

When finding places to trim the budget, most people are quick to blame—and cut—the little splurges and treats they may be indulging in. While this is definitely a good first step, it doesn’t have to stop there. There are actually a number of ways to save money that require very little to no sacrifice whatsoever. For instance, setting your thermostat a couple degrees higher in the summer and lower in the winter likely won’t be noticed at the time, but can end up saving your family quite a bit of money. Additionally, there are a large number of ways to save on your groceries without going hungry.

Below we have compiled a list of our favorite ways to save money including apps, planning, and grocers.

Meal Plan

Meal planning is an incredibly important step in saving money at the grocery store. By planning around what you have on hand, you can reduce the number of items you need to purchase. Additionally, going into the store knowing exactly what you will buy helps cut way back on impulse purchases.

Receipt Hog

For a fun way to earn some gift cards, consider downloading the Receipt Hog app. This app allows users to upload pictures of their receipts in exchange for points, which can be used to purchase gift card prizes. The little pet pig in the app especially loves grocery receipts, and will give extra points for those. If you like this app, be sure to check out others like it, including Yaarlo and Receipt Pal.

Another simple-to-use app, iBotta gives cash back whenever you purchase items on the current list. Items could include such things as produce and milk, making it easy to save even if you don’t buy a lot of packaged or name-brand foods.

One of the easiest ways to save some serious cash while grocery shopping is to purchase your food from ALDI. This national chain offers just about any product you might need at prices that are lower than any other grocery store we have found. Because the store stocks mostly their own brand, there is very little comparison shopping to be done, making it quick and easy to cut your grocery bill by as much as 50%.

Go Meatless

Almost everyone loves a good steak from time to time. However, eating meat is not actually very good for your body or the environment. On top of all that, meat is also one of the most expensive items on your grocery list. For all of these reasons, it makes sense to skip the meat a few times a week and eat something a bit less expensive instead.

Skip Convenience Foods

Pre-cut, pre-cooked, and pre-packaged items are all going to be more expensive than they probably should be. Cut the convenience foods from your list and watch your bill as it drops drastically. Frozen pizzas can be replaced with homemade versions, chips can be split into individual containers by the kids, and fruit is easy enough to cut up on your own.

By using a few of these tips, we just know you can cut back on your grocery spending so you have more money to put toward your financial goals. Looking for tips? Check out our financial eBooks and video resources.
